Felicity

1998–2002: A College Drama

As a college student, I can’t help but reflect on the enchanting theme song of “Felicity.” What a fitting soundtrack for those formative years!

The series begins at Felicity’s high school graduation, where she asks her crush, Ben Covington, to sign her yearbook. Moved by his wish that they had gotten to know each other better, she abandons her pre-med dreams at Stanford and follows Ben to New York.

Her overprotective parents, worried about her impulsive decision, travel to New York to try to persuade her to return home. Felicity initially doubts her choice but soon realizes she came to New York not just to follow Ben but to discover her true self.

Over its four-season run, “Felicity” featured two opening themes. The first two seasons were accompanied by a female-sung theme called “Felicity Theme,” part of the first soundtrack, “Felicity: Music From The Hit Television Series.” This song was composed by Welsh singer-songwriter Judith Owen.

In seasons three and four, a new male-sung theme, “New Version of You,” took its place. This track also appeared on the second and final soundtrack, “Felicity: Senior Year.” The song was co-written by the show’s creator, J.J. Abrams, and filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, who likely performed or recorded it.

In a delightful twist, the show’s producers were inspired by a Twilight Zone episode during the second season. They crafted a new Twilight Zone-themed opening, complete with music and a video sequence. Fortunately, one dedicated “Felicity” fan combined all the unique versions of this theme into a single video. Check it out below.

This editor compiled all the Felicity opening themes. Seasons one and two were performed by Amy Jo Johnson, while seasons three and four featured J.J. Abrams.

Lyrics

“New Version of You”

Can you become
Can you become
A new version of you

New wallpaper
New shoe leather
A new way home
I don’t remember

New version of you
I need a new version of me

New version of you
I need a new version of me
